Less noise, same evidence
A status read should answer "what matters now?" — not replay everything that ever happened. The history still exists; it just stopped being the default.
§1 The situation
The workflow registry's status read had grown into an audit dump: every caller got the full history whether it needed one or not — about 304.9 KiB and 823 rows per read, by the project's own measurement. For an operator asking "what needs attention now?", nearly all of that was noise, and the noise was the default.
§2 What I did
Re-profiled the registry's read path, changed the default status payload to omit detail the default consumer doesn't need, preserved the full detail as an explicit opt-in path, and added focused and full verification coverage — so the slimmer default can't silently drop evidence.
§3 Result
The default read dropped to about 36.8 KiB and 177 rows — roughly an eightfold reduction in payload volume, as measured within this project. The benchmark is project-specific and would need re-measuring anywhere else. Audit detail survived in full, one explicit flag away.
§4 Difficulty & judgment
The trap in this kind of optimization is deleting the evidence along with the noise. The constraint that shaped the change: audit details must stay accessible the moment an operator actually needs them — they just shouldn't ride along on every read. Compact status improves decisions; opt-in detail preserves diagnosis. The regression coverage exists to keep that bargain honest.
§5 Not claimed
Deliberately left unclaimed
- A portable benchmark — the before/after figures are project-specific measurements from a working source, and would need current re-measurement before reuse.
- An end-user latency improvement — transfer volume went down; latency wasn't measured, so it isn't claimed.
- Sole authorship — the work was collaborative and AI-assisted, and labeled that way.
§6 The same work, other lenses
- Business systems
- A simplified default operator view that retains detailed evidence for explicit inspection.
- Engineering
- A profiled read path, fewer unnecessary rows and less transfer volume, and regression coverage over both.
- Operations leadership
- Less status noise between operators and their current decisions and blockers, with audit detail still in reach.
